Digital Storytelling and Its Role in Teaching English Grammar

The use of new technologies has played an important role in the field of English language teaching in recent years. Digital storytelling is one of the uses of technology in education that can not only keep English language teaching in Iran in line with global advances in this field, but also be effective in spreading Iranian culture. This study investigated the impact of digital storytelling (DST) on EFL learners' grammar skills, specifically the past tense of verbs. To achieve this goal, two groups of ninth-grade students were selected. Group ۱ received DST-based instruction on "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," while Group ۲ received conventional grammar instruction. A ۳۰-item multiple-choice grammar test (pre-test) was administered to all participants prior to the interventions, and the results were subsequently collected. Then to assess the effectiveness of the instructional interventions, the pre-test was readministered to both groups and the post-test results have been determined. A t-test was conducted to analyze the data. The findings revealed significantly greater improvement in grammar skills among students in the DST-based teaching method group compared to the conventional instruction group. So, it is suggested that a DST-based curriculum be integrated into pedagogical approaches to optimize student achievement.
