On the Effect of Employing Web –based Mentor Teaching on Iranian EFL Teachers' Teaching Knowledge

Technology seems a requirement for the new generation of learners and needs to be integrated in recent curriculum. New forms of technology such as Web, communication software, electronic forums, and digital virtual contexts seem to cause changes in different dimensions of life in general and education in specific. The issue sounds to be very young, however, a number of scholars have attempted to explore the effects of such factors in English Language Teaching (ELT). The present study aims at exploring the effects of employing Web-based mentor teaching on Iranian EFL teachers' Teaching Knowledge. A sample (N=۴۰) of novice EFL teachers from Torbat-e Heydariyeh and Mahvelat, Khorasan Razavi, Iran was randomly selected. These participants were randomly assigned to control (N=۲۰) and experimental (N=۲۰) groups. Both groups were given Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) as the pretest. The two groups received guidance and support from an experienced EFL teacher as the mentor. The treatment experienced by the experimental group was the application of Web as a means to receive the materials from the mentor. Participants in the control group received the same materials as the former group in a conventional form. Finally, participants in the two groups sat for the posttest being the same as the pretest. Results of independent samples t-test manifested that the experimental group performed significantly better than the other group in TKT administered at the end of the study. The present finding provides pedagogical implications for using Web in the field of English Language Teaching.
