چکیده مقاله:

The future of the oil and gas industry is being reshaped by the rapid evolution of smart refineries driven by digital process engineering. Traditional refinery operations, once heavily dependent on manual supervision, isolated control systems, and reactive maintenance strategies, are now transitioning toward highly integrated, intelligent, and data-centric industrial environments. This transformation is fueled by the convergence of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), digital twins, cloud computing, and real-time analytics. Together, these technologies enable refineries to optimize operational efficiency, reduce downtime, improve safety, and achieve sustainability goals with unprecedented precision. Digital process engineering serves as the foundation of this evolution by connecting engineering workflows, operational systems, and predictive analytics into a unified digital ecosystem. Smart refineries can continuously monitor equipment health, predict failures before they occur, and automate complex decision-making processes in real time. This shift from reactive to predictive and prescriptive operations significantly lowers maintenance costs while increasing productivity and reliability. At the same time, digital technologies support environmental compliance by minimizing emissions, optimizing energy consumption, and improving resource utilization. The emergence of smart refineries also introduces major changes to workforce dynamics and industrial management practices. Human operators increasingly collaborate with intelligent systems, requiring new technical skills centered around data analytics, automation, and digital infrastructure management. As energy markets become more competitive and sustainability pressures intensify, companies adopting digital process engineering gain a strategic advantage through improved agility, operational resilience, and cost efficiency. The study of smart refineries highlights how digital transformation is no longer an optional innovation but a critical pathway for the future of refining. By integrating intelligent technologies with process engineering principles, the refinery industry is moving toward autonomous, safer, more sustainable, and economically optimized operations capable of meeting the complex demands of the modern energy landscape.
