The refining industry is undergoing a major transformation driven by digitalization, automation, and advanced process engineering technologies. As refineries face increasing pressure to improve operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact, enhance safety, and remain competitive in volatile energy markets, effective data integration strategies have become essential for successful digital transformation. Modern refinery operations generate enormous volumes of data from distributed control systems (DCS), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) platforms, industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices, maintenance systems, laboratory systems, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, and advanced process control applications. However, much of this information remains fragmented across disconnected platforms, limiting visibility, slowing decision-making, and reducing operational agility. This article explores the critical role of data integration in enabling Digital Process Engineering Transformation within refinery environments. It examines how integrated data ecosystems support real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, process optimization, energy management, and intelligent operational decision-making. The discussion highlights common integration challenges such as legacy infrastructure, incompatible data formats, cybersecurity risks, and organizational silos that often hinder digital modernization efforts. In response, the article presents practical integration architectures including centralized platforms, edge-to-cloud models, and hybrid industrial data systems designed to improve connectivity and scalability. The study also evaluates emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, digital twins, cloud computing, and smart sensors that are reshaping refinery process engineering. By implementing robust data governance frameworks and real-time synchronization strategies, refinery operators can achieve higher asset reliability, reduced downtime, improved production efficiency, and stronger sustainability performance. Industry research indicates that digitally integrated refineries can significantly lower operational costs while enhancing safety and regulatory compliance. The article concludes by emphasizing that data integration is no longer simply an IT initiative but a strategic operational requirement for future-ready refining enterprises. Refineries that successfully integrate engineering, operational, and enterprise data systems will be better positioned to achieve intelligent automation, adaptive process optimization, and long-term industrial resilience in an increasingly digital energy landscape.
