Metal hydrides offer a promising approach for solid-state hydrogen storage due to their high volumetric density, moderate operating pressures, and potential safety advantages over compressed hydrogen. This review presents the current state of metal hydride materials for hydrogen storage, including intermetallic compounds, complex hydrides, and alloys. The mechanisms of hydrogen absorption and desorption, thermodynamic properties, kinetics, and cycling stability are discussed. Key challenges, such as slow reaction kinetics, heat management, material degradation, and system-level limitations, are examined. The review also highlights the integration of metal hydride storage within hydrogen energy systems, including fuel cells and renewable hydrogen supply chains, emphasizing the importance of optimizing material selection and storage design for practical applications. Finally, future research directions are outlined to improve the performance, efficiency, and scalability of metal hydride hydrogen storage systems in a sustainable hydrogen economy.
