Explaining the Epistemological Foundations of Civilization-Building Jurisprudence in the Thought of Imam Khomeini and Martyr Mohammad Baqir Sadr

The aim of this study is to analyze and elucidate the epistemological foundations of "civilization-building jurisprudence" within the thought of Imam Khomeini and Martyr Sadr, and to identify the points of convergence and divergence between their views. In addition to examining the interaction between reason and revelation and the role of society in jurisprudence, this research addresses the impact of differing epistemological approaches on the theory of civilization-building through jurisprudence. The study employs a descriptive-analytical method, utilizing a comparative content analysis approach to extract the epistemological and civilizational indicators of jurisprudence. The findings indicate that both thinkers view jurisprudence as extending beyond the realm of individual rulings, defining it instead as a tool for guiding society and realizing the objectives of Sharia.A macro-perspective on jurisprudence, the integration of reason and revelation, and an emphasis on the role of society within jurisprudence are among the most significant commonalities in this area. Conversely, the mystical approach—emphasizing *Wilā’ī* (spiritual-authoritative) intuition and the ethical-spiritual dimensions of jurisprudence—represents a key perspective of Imam Khomeini; this stands in stark contrast to the logical and inductive approach of Martyr Sadr, which focuses on the structural and analytical dimensions of jurisprudence.The findings of this research indicate that combining these two approaches can render civilization-building jurisprudence ethical and society-oriented, while simultaneously making it logical, structural, and amenable to systematic planning. Furthermore, this synthesis highlights the interplay between reason and revelation, the importance of ethical and spiritual dimensions, and the necessity of systematic socio-economic analysis in the development of civilization-building jurisprudence, thereby providing a foundation for jurisprudential and civilizational policymaking in contemporary Islamic societies.
