Terra Preta: Origin, Composition, Physicochemical Properties, and Implications for Sustainable Soil Systems

This review focuses on Terra Preta soils, a unique example of resilient anthropogenic soil systems formed through the long-term activity of ancient communities. The introduction substantiates the relevance of studying Terra Preta in the context of modern soil science, ecology, and sustainable land use. It examines the main hypotheses regarding the origin and formation mechanisms of these soils, including the role of pyrogenic carbon, organic residues, and mineral components. The chemical and physical properties of Terra Preta are analyzed in detail, including high cation exchange capacity, stable organic matter, increased nutrient content, and favorable aggregate structure. Particular attention is paid to biological and microbiological features, including high microbial activity, diverse soil biota, and their contribution to long-term fertility maintenance. A separate section examines the ecological and modern significance of Terra Preta as a model for sustainable soil technologies, biochar systems, and carbon sequestration strategies. The conclusion summarizes the key findings and highlights the potential for using Terra Preta formation principles in modern agroecosystems and climate-sensitive soil management practices.
