Evaluation of Insecticidal Activity of Extracts from Tabernaemontana sananho and Valeriana chaerophylloides Against Aphis gossypii

The insecticidal activity of extracts from Tabernaemontana sananho (local name: “fruta leche”) and Valeriana chaerophylloides (local name: “canutillo”) was evaluated against the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii, to explore natural alternatives for its control. Ether-based (hexane) and hydroalcoholic extracts were prepared from dried (۴۰ °C) and ground plant material at concentrations of ۱۵, ۲۵, and ۳۵% v/v. Efficacy was assessed by a spray bioassay using ۵ aphids per Petri dish and ۳ replicates per treatment, with mortality recorded at ۲۰, ۴۰, and ۶۰ min. Imidacloprid ۲.۵% was used as a positive control, and a blank as a negative control. At ۶۰ min and ۳۵% v/v, the ether extract of V. chaerophylloides produced the highest response (۱۰۰.۰% mortality), followed by the ether extract of T. sananho (۹۳.۴%). In contrast, the hydroalcoholic extracts showed lower mortality (۱۳.۴% for V. chaerophylloides and ۴۰.۰% for T. sananho). Overall, the results highlight the promise of ether extracts, especially that of V. chaerophylloides, as candidates for botanical insecticide formulations, although additional studies are needed to confirm field performance and formulation stability.
