چکیده مقاله:

Herbal aphrodisiacs have been used for centuries across diverse medical traditions to enhance sexual desire and vitality. Over the past two decades, accumulating scientific evidence has revealed that many of these botanicals also exert psychotropic effects, influencing mood, anxiety, depression, and cognitive function. This overlap is clinically significant, as sexual dysfunction frequently co-occurs with psychological disorders, reflecting shared neurobiological substrates that encompass monoaminergic neurotransmission, endocrine regulation, oxidative balance, and stress-response pathways. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from preclinical investigations and clinical studies to evaluate medicinal plants that demonstrate concurrent effects on sexual function and psychotropic outcomes, with particular emphasis on their underlying mechanisms. We focus on four botanicals -Crocus sativus (saffron), Rosa damascena, Panax ginseng, and Alpinia galanga- each of which has shown promising dual benefits in randomized controlled trials and experimental models. We examine their phytochemical profiles, therapeutic efficacy, and mechanistic actions, including modulation of nitric oxide signaling, regulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, enhancement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor activity, antioxidant defense systems, and monoamine reuptake inhibition.Although the available evidence supports the potential role of these botanicals in managing psychosexual dysfunction, several limitations constrain definitive conclusions. These include relatively small sample sizes, short intervention durations, substantial variability in extract formulations, and a predominance of subjective outcome measures. Future investigations should prioritize large-scale, well-controlled studies that integrate molecular, hormonal, and neurochemical biomarkers. Overall, these medicinal plants may represent valuable complementary approaches for improving sexual health, emotional well-being, and quality of life, though further rigorous research is needed to establish their clinical utility.
