Eco-Passive Hull Coating for Protecting Fish Health

Maritime operations introduce several environmental stressors, including toxic metal leaching from antifouling paints, biocide release, microplastic abrasion, and underwater noise emissions. These factors negatively affect fish behavior, growth, reproduction, and larval survival. This study presents an Eco-Passive Multilayer Coating as a sustainable and non-toxic alternative to conventional ship hull systems. The proposed coating consists of three functional layers: (۱) a bio-mimetic microstructured silicone surface inspired by shark skin to prevent biofouling without releasing copper or zinc; (۲) a viscoelastic acoustic-dampening layer that reduces hull-borne noise and minimizes acoustic stress on fish; and (۳) an eco-friendly controlled-release layer using natural antifouling compounds derived from marine algae to avoid toxic accumulation in the water. Environmental assessment indicates significant reductions in chemical discharge, improved noise mitigation, and enhanced compatibility with sensitive fish larvae.
