Mortality Impacts of Particulate Matter in Delhi and Beijing: An AIRQ-Based Comparison

Air pollution constitutes a significant public health challenge in Asian megacities, including Delhi and Beijing. The present study utilized the AIRQ model to evaluate the mortality impacts of exposure to particulate matter in the two aforementioned cities. Pollutant concentration data were collected from selected monitoring stations and integrated with epidemiological parameters. The findings of the study indicated that the number of attributable deaths under all three relative risk scenarios was significantly higher in Delhi (ranging from ۱۳۰,۵۷۶ to ۱۸۸,۲۷۳) compared to Beijing (ranging from ۶۰,۸۱۰ to ۸۶,۵۰۶). In Delhi, PM۲.۵ contributed more substantially to mortality, whereas in Beijing, PM۱۰ was the dominant factor. The observed variations in the study's findings are attributed to elevated particulate concentrations and demographic characteristics present in Delhi. The study emphasizes the necessity for more stringent control policies in Delhi and underscores the importance of epidemiological models in health impact assessments.
