چکیده مقاله:

The revitalization of pedestrian-oriented spaces has become a central concern in contemporary urban design, particularly in rapidly growing Middle Eastern cities. This study investigates the urban design challenges and opportunities in revitalizing Valiasr Pedestrian Street in Tabriz, Iran, with the objective of identifying design strategies that enhance both spatial quality and social vitality. The core research question is: What are the main challenges and opportunities in the urban design of Valiasr Pedestrian Street, and how can these be addressed to achieve sustainable revitalization? A mixed-method approach was employed, combining spatial analysis, field observations, and semi-structured interviews with urban planners, shop owners, and local residents. This methodological triangulation enabled the study to examine the street's physical configuration, pedestrian accessibility, functional diversity, and cultural integration. The findings highlight several challenges, including inadequate pedestrian infrastructure, limited continuity with adjacent urban areas, insufficient recreational and green elements, and a lack of harmony between contemporary interventions and the historical context. However, the research also identifies strong opportunities, such as Valiasr's central commercial role, its cultural and symbolic significance, and the high level of social engagement expressed by local users. The study concludes that successful revitalization requires a balanced urban design framework that integrates functional improvements with cultural and historical preservation. Recommended strategies include upgrading pedestrian infrastructure, enhancing green and cultural elements, strengthening connectivity, and encouraging participatory planning. These interventions can transform Valiasr Pedestrian Street into a dynamic urban space that promotes social interaction, supports economic vitality, and contributes to the sustainable development of Tabriz.
