چکیده مقاله:

One of the most important causes of death worldwide is road accidents, which are more acute in developing and underdeveloped countries. Such accidents occur more severely on two-lane two-way suburban roads that do not have median barriers and are more likely to collide with vehicles. The Middle East is one of the regions with high annual road accidents. Iran is one of the Middle Eastern countries where ۹۰ percent of its goods and passenger transport is carried out by road, and it is considered one of the most accident-prone countries in the region. Given this issue, most of the country's suburban road network, especially in the western provinces, is in the form of two-lane roads without median barriers. Identifying the factors affecting the severity of accidents on these types of roads in order to prioritize upgrading to highways is one of the most important tasks of traffic safety engineers. In this article, by using the binary logit model the main factors to severity of accidents on two-lane two-way roads in suburban were identified. The severity of accidents was divided as a dependent variable into two groups: high-severity fatal and injury accidents, and low-severity damage and injury accidents, respectively. Independent variables include parameters of traffic flow, type of accident, weather conditions and type of traffic of class two and four vehicles, but the increase in traffic of class three vehicles decreases such accidents. Increasing the average speed of passing vehicles can cause accidents on two-lane roads in suburban areas.
