Comparing the effectiveness of emotion regulation therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy on depression and anxiety symptoms in caregivers of patients with cancer

Objective: Difficult conditions and various responsibilities imposed on caregivers, and most of these people face psychological problems (such as depression, anxiety). The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of emotion regulation therapy compared to cognitive behavioral therapy on symptoms of anxiety and depression. Method: The study was an experimental study with a pre-test, post-test design and two treatment groups and a follow-up period. The statistical population included family caregivers over ۱۸ years of age of patients with cancer who referred to the chemotherapy department of Seyyed al-Shohada Educational and Medical Center in Isfahan in ۱۴۰۱. Sampling was carried out by purposive sampling. The sample size was ۷۶ people for two groups (۳۸ people in each group). The research instrument included the Distress Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The subjects participated in ۸ ۹۰-minute group therapy sessions of emotion regulation therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy, weekly. In order to obtain the research results, SPSS ۲۷ software was used. In this study, Descriptive statistics including mean and standard deviation and generalized estimating equation were used.Findings: Both emotion regulation therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy interventions showed significant and sustained symptom reduction in depression and anxiety.Conclusion: Emotion regulation therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy were equally effective in treating anxiety and depression symptoms in distressed caregivers. Therefore, emotion regulation therapy is a valuable alternative for treating caregivers of cancer patients.
