The power of Feminine Narratives in Diasporic Contexts, investigation of Selected Works of Amy Tan

The concept of power relations and its effect on different modes of displaying past is one of the most controversial and yet interesting fields of study. Since there is a great tendency to portray a continuous and homogeneous history, historians try to conceal any traces of discontinuity and contingency in presentation of past, in favor of dominant discourses. In this regard, history becomes the asymmetrical strands of past, waiting to make sense of; in this process, power relations shape the quality of recalled information, in form of narratives. Recalling memory is delineated by authoritarian groups to maintain an imposed order, in society. As the process of remembering is open to subjective interpretation and articulated by narrative acts, merging fact and fantasy are proliferating, in the act of recalling past In diasporic contexts, feminine narratives play an important role in subverting the patriarchal power. Women experience this type of empowerment in the domestic domains of home, in the form of storytelling. Storytelling, as a way of sharing past memories, is an instrument to evade the tyranny of masculine sphere and it has been considered a feminine space. Amy Tan utilizes the strategy of recalling memories for portrayal of immigrant women’s suppressed voice. This essay is an investigation of the power of feminine narratives in selected works of Amy Tan, The Bonesetters’ Daughter (۲۰۰۱) and The Hundred Secret Senses(۱۹۹۵).
