Corrosion always threatens metal structures. Corrosion is a slow but continuous process, although it is very rapid in environments such as the ocean. Among the various methods, polymer coatings, especially epoxy, are of great interest to prevent the corrosion process. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have revolutionized protective epoxy coatings through their exceptional structural tunability and multifunctionality. This review critically examines cutting-edge developments in MOF-incorporated epoxy systems, demonstrating unparalleled corrosion protection via a novel network-integration method, where MOFs act as smart, pH-responsive cross-linking nodes that release inhibitors on demand. Simultaneously, MOFs impart superior flame retardancy through synergistic condensed-phase char reinforcement and gas-phase radical quenching. We elucidate structure-property relationships governing MOF performance, emphasizing critical parameters such as pore geometry, metal-cluster chemistry, and organic linker functionality. Current limitations in industrial scalability (~۵۰-۱۰۰/g production costs) and long-term environmental stability are analyzed through techno-economic and life-cycle perspectives. Emerging opportunities in machine learning-accelerated MOF discovery, multi-stimuli responsive systems, and hybrid MOF/۲D nanomaterial architectures are highlighted as transformative pathways for next-generation smart coatings.
