چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Respiratory diseases, including pneumonia, impose a significant burden on children’s health worldwide. While infectious and environmental factors have been extensively studied, the complex relationship between psychological health and respiratory health in children has received less attention. This review aims to examine the mechanisms linking psychological health status with the incidence and severity of respiratory diseases in children. Methods: A comprehensive systematic review of existing scientific literature was conducted using reputable databases (such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and UpToDate) with keywords related to pneumonia, respiratory diseases, children, psychological health, stress, anxiety, trauma, and linking mechanisms. Articles published in the past ten years that explored associations between psychological factors and respiratory diseases in pediatric populations were selected and analyzed.Findings: Evidence indicates that chronic psychological stress, anxiety, and traumatic childhood experiences can affect respiratory health through multiple biological and behavioral pathways. These pathways include activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, increased systemic inflammation, weakened immune response, and alterations in autonomic function. Moreover, behavioral factors such as disrupted sleep patterns, poor nutrition, and reduced adherence to medical treatments may further exacerbate respiratory conditions. In children with chronic respiratory illnesses such as asthma, these psychological burdens contribute to worsening respiratory symptoms. Conclusion: Psychological health is a crucial determinant of children’s respiratory well-being. The complex mechanisms connecting mental health to respiratory health warrant greater clinical and research attention. Comprehensive treatment approaches that integrate psychological care alongside medical management could significantly improve clinical outcomes and enhance the quality of life for children with respiratory diseases.
