Review of Nano Applications in the Oil and Gas Industry

Nanotechnology, as one of the most advanced interdisciplinary fields, has gained a special place in the oil and gas industry over the past two decades. The unique properties of nanomaterials, including high surface area to volume ratio, high surface activity, and quantum effects, have led to their widespread use in various stages of the energy industry value chain, from exploration and drilling to production, refining, transportation, and equipment maintenance. In the exploration phase, smart nanoparticles and nanosensors enable accurate reservoir imaging and reduce geological uncertainties. In drilling, the addition of nanoparticles to drilling muds leads to improved rheological behavior, increased wellbore stability, reduced friction, and prevention of formation damage. In the field of enhanced recovery, nanoparticles have been able to significantly increase production efficiency by modifying wettability, reducing interfacial tension, and improving foam stability. In addition, nanofilters in oil and gas refining have improved separation, reduced energy consumption, and extended the life of process units. Nanocoatings and nanocomposites play a key role in controlling corrosion and extending the life of equipment. The development of nanoscale sensors has also enabled real-time monitoring and intelligent management of wells and transmission lines. The results show that nanotechnology not only increases efficiency and reduces costs, but also strengthens the path of the oil and gas industry towards sustainability and intelligence.
