Aluminum foams are used widely in the automotive and aerospace industries due to high strength to weight ratio and high energy absorption capacity. Knowledge of the mechanical behavior of these materials, especially under dynamic loadings, is thus necessary. This paper reports experimental results of low-velocity impact on A۳۵۶ aluminum matrix composite foam with an impactor of ۴.۷ kg mass hitting with ۶.۷ m/s velocity. The experimental measurements were done using a drop-weight impact testing machine with a hemispherical striker tip. Al/SiCp composite foam was manufactured by direct foaming of melts with blowing agent CaCO۳. The contact force versus time, energy absorbed versus time along with the failure modes were presented. The obtained impact response was a stable and low-oscillation response with a maximum oscillation of ۵.۸%. The results showed that the presence of SiC particles in the foam structure results in an increase of its impact strength with ۹۰% increase. Comparison with the results of other researchers confirms this. Regarding the lack of experimental data on the impact behavior of A۳۵۶/SiCp foam, the obtained results can be used to develop advanced composite materials for various industrial applications.
