Key Phytochemicals with Anti-Aging Effects: A Narrative Review

Aging is a multifaceted biological process characterized by a decline in physiological function and increased susceptibility to age-related diseases. This narrative review explored the potential anti-aging effects of phytochemicals-bioactive compounds derived from plants by examining their mechanisms of action and health benefits. Phytochemicals exhibit significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may mitigate oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, both of which are pivotal contributors to aging. We conducted a comprehensive search across major medical and scientific databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase, to identify reviews, meta-analyses, original articles, randomized clinical trials, and case series related to the anti-aging effects of phytochemicals. The search strategy utilized the keywords of phytochemicals, bioactive compounds, antioxidants, nutraceuticals, aging, oxidative stress, cellular senescence, and inflammation. Studies published between ۲۰۰۰ and ۲۰۲۵ were included, with an emphasis on the most recent and high-quality research addressing the role of phytochemicals in the aging process. Key phytochemicals such as resveratrol and curcumin can activate longevity-associated pathways, including sirtuins, to promote cellular health and longevity. Furthermore, phytochemicals can modulate cellular signaling pathways related to senescence and metabolic regulation. The integration of these compounds into dietary strategies presents a promising approach to enhance health. By elucidating the protective effects of phytochemicals against agerelated decline, this article aimed to inform future research directions and dietary recommendations for aging populations, ultimately contributing to improved health outcomes and quality of life in older adults.
