Integrating PBL and Kahoot! into Environmental Engineering Education: A Model for Active Learning to Enhance Student Engagement and Academic Outcomes

This study examines the effectiveness of integrating interactive digital platforms and project-based learning (PBL) as complementary active learning strategies in applied mathematics education. Using a longitudinal design, data were collected over three consecutive academic years in a higher education context, during which student response systems (SRSs), including Kahoot!, were progressively implemented alongside project-based learning activities. Academic performance indicators, continuous assessment outcomes, and student satisfaction measures were analyzed to evaluate the impact of the proposed instructional approach.The findings indicate that the gradual and structured integration of interactive platforms with PBL was associated with consistent improvements in students’ academic performance and engagement. In particular, formative assessment and immediate feedback facilitated through SRSs supported students’ understanding of theoretical concepts, while project-based learning contributed to the development of higher-order cognitive skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking. Survey results further revealed high levels of student satisfaction with the use of active learning strategies, even during the post-pandemic academic period.
