Architectural Heritage Revitalization through Contextualism in Historic District of Cities

In historic areas of city, construction of large-scale projects consist of complex challenges in balancing the operative requirements and lower the impacts on a delicate and sensible urban environment. In this context, especially the visual and cultural relevancy of new designs and constructions within the old character of area is very important. In the global transition of the construction sectors towards large-scale and high-rise buildings, construction sites in historic areas shall represent a particular opportunity where the application of contextualist strategies can be particularly feasible and provide additional value in terms of the environmental impact as well as a better attachment to the neighborhood. This work addresses the need for a framework to provide the basis for the application of contextualist principles in planning, design and construction within historic areas of city. This study was intended to support both researchers and professionals by providing a clearer view of the potentials, challenges and issues that can arise during the implementation of large-scale or high-rise buildings in historic districts. At the same time, the features discussed in this research can act as a reference for the policymakers, administrators and technical offices in various municipalities to favor the implementation of preservation principles in the upcoming projects.
