Disrupting the Shield: New Strategies Against Biofilm-Mediated Drug Resistance

Microbial biofilms represent a formidable challenge in modern healthcare, acting as protective barriers for pathogens and significantly contributing to antimicrobial resistance. Biofilm-mediated drug resistance is a critical factor in persistent infections, complicating treatment strategies and increasing healthcare costs. This review synthesizes recent advances in understanding biofilm biology and explores innovative approaches to disrupt biofilms. We examine biochemical strategies such as phytochemical-based nanocomposites, antimicrobial hydrogels, and vitamin-based treatments, as well as physical and mechanical methods including surface-adaptive robotic systems and nanomaterials. Furthermore, we highlight challenges in translating laboratory findings into clinical practice and propose future directions for research. This synthesis aims to guide the development of integrated strategies to combat biofilm-mediated drug resistance, enhancing therapeutic efficacy and improving patient outcomes.
