Training can potentially accelerate cardiac output and inhibit cardiomyocyte autophagy in old male rats

Background & Objective: Aging affects cardiac function and heart output. Regular exercise can improve heart function in old age. In this experimental study, the effects of High-intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Moderate-intensity Continuous Training (MICT) on the reduction of cardiomyocyte autophagy and cardiac function index were evaluatedMaterials and Methods: ۲۴ old (> ۲۰ months) male rats were divided into ۳ groups of Control (C), HIIT, and MICT. The old animals of the C group received no training and the HIIT and MICT were applied as high and moderate intensities of training with different intervals according to the protocol. Aerobic power and training capacity (VO۲max) were also assessed prior to the training. After ۸ weeks of training (۵ days/week), ۲-dimensional (۲D) echocardiography was hired for the sonographic assessment of the heart, and the tissue samples of the left ventricle were dissected for genes expression (PGC-۱α and FOXO-۳α). Data were analyzed using SPSS software (v.۱۹) and presented as Mean±SD. P<۰.۰۵ was also considered a significant valueResults: Significantly (p<۰.۰۵), the gene expression of PGC-۱α and FOXO-۳α were increased and decreased, respectively in all treatment groups (HIIT and MICT) than C animals. Left Ventricle End-Systolic Dimension (LVESD) was decreased (p<۰.۰۵) and the Left Ventricular End-Diastolic Diameter (LVEDD), Ejection Fraction (EF), and Fractional Shortening (FS) was increased (p<۰.۰۵) in treatment groups than C animals. These changes were also found significant (p<۰.۰۵) in the HIIIT group than in MICT animalsConclusion: HIIT can potentially alleviate the autophagy-associated gene expression and accelerate cardiac function in aged heart than MICT
