چکیده مقاله:
Background: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a relatively common malignant tumor in rabbits, frequently affecting the skin of the ears, face, and feet. SCC is fairly commonly observed and often invasive, with the potential for metastasis. Concurrent heterophilic inflammation is a common feature that can disguise the neoplastic component, especially in cytological preparations. Multiple samples taken from different angles and depths may help to elucidate the tumour type. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention play a critical role in successful management and long-term prognosis. Methods: A three-year-old intact male Dutch rabbit presented with a visible mass located at the base of the left external ear. The owner reported the lesion immediately after noticing the abnormal growth. The rabbit underwent surgical excision of the mass, which was submitted for histopathological evaluation. Postoperatively, enrofloxacin (۱۰%) was administered subcutaneously every ۲۴ hours (۲۰ U, insulin syringe) for seven days. Results: Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Three weeks after surgery, the surgical site had completely healed, and no signs of recurrence were observed. As the rabbit exhibited normal appetite and respiration, thoracic radiography for metastasis assessment was not performed. Conclusion: Although the surgical outcome was favorable, the malignant nature of SCC warrants regular follow-up examinations to monitor potential metastasis or recurrence. Early detection and complete excision remain key factors in improving prognosis.
