PRP implications in Canine medicine: A review

چکیده مقاله:

This review evaluates the clinical applications, therapeutic effects, and challenges associated with the use of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), a growth factor-rich blood product, in canine veterinary medicine. PRP, which can be prepared as an autologous or allogeneic product, has shown considerable efficacy across various canine treatment areas, including regenerative medicine and disease management. Repeated intra-articular PRP injections in cases of osteoarthritis (OA) have been consistently linked with improvements in pain, lameness, and joint function. Furthermore, the application of PRP to large and acute cutaneous wounds has accelerated wound closure and improved healing by inducing re-epithelialization, granulation tissue formation, and angiogenesis. Studies also highlight PRP's potential in accelerating bone healing and reducing clinical signs associated with ligament and meniscal injuries. Notably, PRP also exhibits antimicrobial properties, proving effective in reducing the bacterial burden in infected wounds such as those with MRSA. This review was done through searching scientific databases such as “google scholar” “pub med” “Sid” with the following keywords, ”PRP” “Small animal” “Platelet rich plasma” “canine”. Overall, PRP is a valuable therapeutic tool in canine medicine, particularly in the management of musculoskeletal disorders and wound healing. However, critical factors such as the PRP preparation method, platelet concentration, and leukocyte content significantly influence clinical outcomes. It is essential that treatment protocols are optimized and customized to account for the considerable product heterogeneity and response variability observed in different clinical scenarios (e.g., small wounds or partial ligament injuries). Further research is necessary to overcome current limitations and achieve optimal therapeutic results
