Background: Estrous synchronization is an important tool for sheep management. It contributes to breeding and genetic improvement. This review examines the effect of prostaglandin F۲α (PGF۲α). PGF۲α is a luteolytic agent that synchronizes estrous in ewes during the breeding season. Its effect is mediated by the luteolysis of the corpus luteum and the rapid decline in progesterone. This causes estrous to occur synchronously. Protocols vary. Some have a single injection (effective between days ۵ and ۱۴ of the cycle). Some have double injections to cover ewes that do not respond to the first injection. The interval between injections is important. Both short (e.g. ۷ days) and long (۱۲ to ۱۴ days) intervals affect follicular development and subsequent fertility. Longer intervals usually give better results. Methods: This review was based on scientific articles from Google Scholar. Results: A high percentage of ewes respond to estrous (۷۳.۵–۸۳.۳%). However, pregnancy rates may vary. Combining PGF۲α with adjuvants such as eCG or progestogen increases pregnancy rates and multiple births. Important factors for success include cyclicity of the ewe, good body condition, and absence of anestrus due to lactation or nutritional deficiency. Conclusion: PGF۲α is an effective method for synchronizing estrous in ewes. It is most effective when used in a two-injection protocol with eCG or progestogen. Improving this method and ensuring proper estrous condition in ewes will increase fertility and reproductive efficiency.
