Pulmonary Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Holstein Cattle: A Case Report

Background: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is among the most prevalent neoplasms affecting various domestic animal species. While it can develop in younger individuals across species, its prevalence tends to rise with age. In rare cases, primary SCC can develop in esophagus, stomach, nasal passages, sinuses, hard palate, gums, and lungs. However, its occurrence as pulmonary SCC in cattle is scarcely documented. This study aims to characterize the gross and histopathological features of pulmonary SCC in cattle. Methods: A Holstein cattle was presented with clinical signs of fever, dyspnea, coughing, anorexia, abdominal respiration. Following necropsy, lung tissue samples were collected and processed using standard histological techniques. Sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) for further histopathological evaluation. Results: On gross examination, pleural adhesion and pulmonary abscessation was visualized in the lungs. Histopathological examination revealed diffuse tumoral keratinocyte with desmosomes and keratin pearls within pulmonary parenchyma. Based on these features, the neoplasm was diagnosed as grade ۲ SCC, either primary or secondary (metastatic). Conclusion: This case report describes a rare occurrence of pulmonary SCC in a Holstein cattle. Documenting these rare presentations enhances our understanding of thoracic neoplasms in cattle and underscores the essential role of appropriate histopathological examination in establishing a definitive diagnosis.
