Hepatoprotective Effects of Chicory Extract Against Indomethacin-Induced Liver Injury in Syrian Mice

Background: The liver is a vital organ, and maintaining its health is essential for survival. This study evaluated the hepatoprotective effects of chicory (Cichorium intybus) extract, rich in antioxidants, against indomethacin-induced liver toxicity. Methods: Twenty-four Syrian mice (mean weight, ۲۵ g) were randomized into three groups (n = ۸): control, indomethacin (۲۵ mg/kg), and chicory extract (۲۰۰ mg/kg) plus indomethacin (۲۵ mg/kg). Treatments were administered orally for ۷ consecutive days. Twenty-four hours after the last dose, blood samples were collected for biochemical and oxidative stress assays. Liver tissues were collected for histopathological analysis. Serum ALT, AST, ALP, albumin, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were measured. Results: Indomethacin significantly increased serum ALT and ALP, slightly elevated AST and albumin, and decreased TAC. Chicory extract co-administration significantly reduced ALT, AST, and ALP levels, improved TAC, and ameliorated vacuolar degeneration and vascular congestion in liver tissue. Conclusion: Chicory extract exerts a hepatoprotective effect against indomethacin-induced liver injury in mice, likely due to its antioxidant properties.
