Splenectomy in a ۱۰-Year-Old Spayed Female Pomeranian Dog: A Case Report

Background: The spleen has important functions in hematopoiesis, immune regulation, and blood filtration. Splenic disorders, including tumors, torsion of the spleen, or trauma, usually require surgical resection. This article reports the case of a geriatric Pomeranian dog that presented for surgical splenectomy due to a splenic mass. Methods: A ۱۰-year-old female Pomeranian who had been spayed was brought to the University of Tehran's Veterinary Hospital with reduced appetite, lethargy, and distended abdomen. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) confirmed the presence of a large splenic mass with free abdominal fluid, while hematological evaluation showed mild anemia. Under general anesthesia, a ventral midline laparotomy was used to perform a total splenectomy after stabilization. To reduce intraoperative bleeding, splenic vessels were sealed with a LigaSure device. Results: There were no complications following the surgical procedure. Recovery from surgery went smoothly. The removed spleen's histopathologic analysis showed extramedullary hematopoiesis, hemosiderosis with diffuse lymphoid hyperplasia, severe diffuse splenitis, and hemangioma. Conclusion: This elderly dog's splenic mass was successfully and safely treated with a total splenectomy. A quick and hemostatic procedure was made possible by the use of energy-based vessel sealing (LigaSure). Achieving positive results in similar cases requires careful surgical management and early diagnostic imaging.
