چکیده مقاله:

Background: Luteoma is a rare ovarian neoplasm that belongs to the sex-cord stromal tumor group, originating from ovarian cells. It has been reported in different species such as dogs, cats, and rodents. This tumor can be hormonally active and produce steroid hormones, which can lead to different clinical signs such as vulvar enlargement and discharge, alopecia, and cystic endometrial hyperplasia. Methods: A ۳-year-old, intact female Domestic Shorthair cat was referred to the Veterinary Hospital. After clinical examination, the animal was referred to the diagnostic imaging department. Sonographic evaluation showed the right ovarian mass. Finally, an ovariohysterectomy was performed surgically. Macroscopically, the mass was yellowish white, measuring approximately ۲ × ۳ × ۲.۵ cm. The excised ovaries and other samples were fixed in ۱۰% neutral buffered formalin, processed routinely, embedded in paraffin, and sectioned at ۵μm thickness. The sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and examined by light microscopy. Results: Histopathological examination revealed multiple nodules of polygonal cells with abundant cytoplasm containing lipid vacuoles, separated by fine fibrovascular connective tissue. Most nuclei were centrally located. Based on histopathological findings, the tumor was diagnosed as a luteoma. At the same time, examination of the uterus revealed cystic endometrial hyperplasia and mild endometritis. Conclusion: Luteoma is a rare neoplasm in felines. Cytological diagnosis of luteoma can be challenging due to its morphological similarity to other neoplasms such as hepatic, adrenal, or pancreatic adenocarcinomas. Differential diagnoses include other ovarian and intra-abdominal tumors that may have similar hormonal activity. Similar to this case, surgical excision is the treatment of choice in luteoma.
