Background: The experience of losing a pet in a disaster like an earthquake can be very painful; this phenomenon can be unique in every person and family. This study was conducted with the aim of experiencing the death of a pet in the earthquake of Antakya, Turkey. Method: This study explores the psychological effects of losing pets during the ۲۰۲۳ earthquake in Antakya, Turkey, using a phenomenological approach. In-depth interviews were conducted with families affected by the disaster. Results: The findings highlight themes of grief, guilt, trauma, and concern for other animals, shedding light on the overlooked emotional consequences of pet loss. The study suggests the need for integrating pet-related considerations into disaster preparedness plans. Conclusion: This study shows that the loss of a pet in a natural disaster such as an earthquake can lead to psychological problems, social and family consequences. The issue of pet protection and related issues should be considered as one of the components of natural disaster preparedness.
