The immense pressure on resources and infrastructure exerted by rapid urbanization poses challenges that remain unmet by existing solutions. Efforts towards making an eco-friendly and sustained city revolve around maximizing resource use in an urban setting by exploiting information as well as communication technologies. The paper proposes a complementary Internet of Things and cloud solution that aims at enhancing resource use within an eco-friendly framework of the city. The proposed approach uses input/output of data from/to an IoT sensor/actuator layer. The proposed solution provides an extension involving an edge layer in order to ensure low latency. Simulation details of the proposed solution on energy management at a district level convey that the proposed solution decreases peak energy demand by ۱۸%, as well as total energy use by ۱۰%, as against the non-cloud approach. The paper discusses various aspects of proposed solutions.
