Associated fungal and aflatoxins contamination in some fresh and market herbal drugs

This investigation was designed to determine percentage incidence of associated fungi with five root herbal drugs belong to Dashmoola and also occurrence and level of aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1 and G2) contamination in fresh and market samples. Mycological analysis was carried out using standard methods. One fresh root sample and one market sample selected for aflatoxin analysis by BGFY test and HPTLC method. Fungi were found in fresh and market samples, Fusarium and Aspergillus genera were more frequently detected than other genera. The fresh and market samples were found in different quantities of Aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, and G2) but levels were very less than tolerance level of aflatoxins (20 μg kg) fixed by the World Health Organization but the contamination may be significant due to their frequent and prolonged consumption.
