The Role of ESG Principles in the Sustainable Transition of the Global Oil and Gas Industry

In recent years, ESG principles (Environmental, Social, and Governance) have emerged as a key framework in guiding the sustainable transition of the global oil and gas industry. In response to increasing environmental pressures, investor requirements, and global policy changes, companies operating in this sector have been compelled to reassess their business models with a focus on sustainability. The objective of this study is to examine the role and function of ESG principles in accelerating the process of sustainable transition within the global oil and gas industry. This research is qualitative and library-based, conducted through content analysis of academic literature, sustainability reports of international companies, and relevant policy documents. The findings indicate that the implementation of ESG principles enhances transparency and investor confidence, improves environmental performance, reduces financial and social risks, and promotes innovation toward clean energy pathways. Moreover, the results show that institutionalizing ESG requires cultural and managerial transformation within the traditional structures of the oil and gas industry to enable this sector to align with the goals of global sustainable development.
