Negative effects of concomitant use of loratadine and diphenhydramine on learning in ۱۲-year-old students with seasonal allergies

The study aimed to determine the Negative effects of concomitant use of loratadine and diphenhydramine on learning in ۱۲-year-old students with seasonal allergies. The study is experimental. All participants included students with seasonal allergies attending sixth grade (ages: ۱۲ years) residing in Dezful city. The study sample size was a total of ۱۰۰ participants (girls and boys). These samples were selected from the target population through Purposeful sampling. First a pre-test of learning was given to all students and their scores were recorded. Then, the students were divided into two groups, one group took loratadine and diphenhydramine daily, and the other group not received drug and attended their classes for one week. Then, a post-test of learning was taken from both groups, the results were extracted and analyzed. The research instrument included a researcher-made learning test. Univariate analysis of covariance was used for data analysis. Data analysis software was SPSS version ۲۷. In the post-test, the learning scores of students taking loratadine and diphenhydramine were significantly lower than those of students not taking the drug. Therefore, the use of loratadine and antihistamine drugs has a negative effect on students' learning (p˂۰.۰۵). Accordingly, it is recommended that students with seasonal allergies control their allergy levels by using masks and avoiding allergens so that they do not need to use diphenhydramine and loratadine.
