In Vitro Comparison of Antibacterial Effect of Two Diode Laser and Sodium Hypochlorite on Enterococcus Faecalis in the Root Canal of Infected Teeth

Objective: Use of laser technology in endodontics has greatly increased in recent years due to the introduction of laser’s antimicrobial properties. This in vitro study aimed to compare antibacterial effectiveness of two wavelength of diode lasers (۹۴۰ and ۹۸۰ nm) on Enterococcus Faecalis bacteria. Methodology: This in vitro laboratory study involved ۲۳ anterior single canal-extracted teeth. Crown of each tooth was cut, and root canal was shaped and autoclaved.Teeth were divided into five groups: positive control group (۵ root canals), negative control group (۳ root canals), and three experimental groups (each contains ۵ root canals).Root canals of each group except negative control group were contaminated with the E.faecalis bacteria, and infected teeth were incubated for ۲۴ hours at ۳۷°C. Negative control group incubated with a sterile solution. Root canals were cleaned by ۹۴۰nm laser irradiation in first group and by ۹۸۰nm laser irradiation in second group and with sodium hypochlorite irrigation in third group. After that, dentin debris was collected. Each tooth sample's bacterial colony forming unit (CFU) was counted and reported.data analysis was done using normality test, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis , Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. A p-value of less than ۰.۰۵ was considered significant. Results: Sodium hypochlorite demonstrated most efficacy in eradicating Enterococcus faecalis in this investigation; and ۹۸۰ nm diode laser and ۹۴۰ nm diode laser showed slightly lower effectiveness, respectively. Conclusion:  we can use diode laser irradiation as a supplemental method to further ensure the elimination of bacteria, in addition to the usual methods and sodium hypochlorite.
