Strategic Analysis of the Role of Sustainable Natural Resource Management in Ensuring Food Security among Nomadic Communities

The food security of nomadic communities is fundamentally intertwined with the sustainability of natural resources, such that any unsustainable management of these resources poses a serious threat to the continued provision of food for these communities. The present study employs a strategic SWOT approach to explore the role of sustainable natural resource management in enhancing food security among the nomadic communities of the Parvar tribe. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with members of the nomadic community and a review of management documents. Subsequently, internal factors (strengths and weaknesses) and external factors (opportunities and threats) were identified and analyzed. The findings revealed that the strengths of natural resource management in the Parvar tribe include rich indigenous knowledge, historical experience in the utilization of rangelands and water resources and the presence of cohesive social networks. In contrast, the weaknesses are primarily associated with financial and infrastructural constraints, limited access to modern technologies and a lack of specialized training in sustainable resource management. Potential opportunities were identified in the form of increasing demand for local products, governmental support and development programs, and heightened public awareness of environmental issues. On the other hand, the main threats include climate change, increasing population pressure on natural resources, and competition with large-scale industrial agriculture. Strategic analysis indicates that the intelligent utilization of strengths and opportunities through aggressive strategies can significantly enhance the impact of sustainable natural resource management on food security. Accordingly, emphasizing indigenous knowledge, enhancing managerial training, and formulating effective supportive policies provide effective pathways to ensure food security and achieve sustainable development in nomadic communities.
