The influence of demographic and socioeconomic factors on a fishing community’s resilience to coastal flooding

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Coastal communities are increasingly vulnerable to flooding, with flood frequency projected to be double this century. Nevertheless, community engagement in flood management is typically perceived as a lesser priority,  leading to ineffective measures in mitigating their disaster risks. Meanwhile, there remains a limited understanding of how socio-demographically distinct groups perceive their adaptive capacities, which essentially enables planners to identify resilience assets at the community level and design appropriate interventions for vulnerable groups. This study aims to examine how demographic and socioeconomic factors influence the perceived resilience of a community at risk, with the Tambakrejo fishing community as the case. The distinctiveness of this study is its concentration on perceived resilience rather than perceived risks to grasp local adaptive capacities.METHODS: To reach the goal, a survey research design was implemented with ۱۰۰ participants—selected through simple random sampling, and multiple linear regression were employed.
