Manifestations of Qur’anic Intertextuality in the Resistance Poems of Mu‘ādh al-Junayd

Mu‘ādh al-Junayd is regarded as one of the most prominent contemporary Yemeni resistance poets, playing an active role in expressing the spirit of popular steadfastness, particularly after the Saudi aggression against Yemen in ۲۰۱۵. For him, poetry is not merely a realm of emotion but a sharp weapon for defending the people and the homeland, and a decisive tool for embodying their resistance, suffering, and pain—especially concerning the Palestinian cause, Gaza, and the “Flood of al-Aqsa” battle. Al-Junayd became known as the “poet of war” and the “hero of ballistic poems” due to the frankness, strength, and fervor of his verses, which reflect revolutionary consciousness and resistance. Given his profound Qur’anic culture, his poetry is replete with Qur’anic intertextuality, which grants it religious, intellectual, and aesthetic depth. This study—employing a descriptive and analytical method—aims to shed light on al-Junayd’s resistance poetry through a critical lens, uncovering the techniques by which he employs Qur’anic texts via diverse forms of intertextuality. The research shows that he draws upon the verses of the Holy Qur’an both directly and indirectly: through the use of Qur’anic vocabulary, the inspiration of concepts and meanings, imitation of the style of verses and surahs, and passing references to certain Qur’anic narratives.
