Classification of the Uses of History in Qur’anic Exegesis

Qur’anic exegetes have relied on multiple motives for employing history, and this study seeks to define and clarify these motives. Using a descriptive–analytical methodology and through the study of exegetical and historical sources, four fundamental functions of history in relation to Qur’anic interpretation have been identified: (۱) The ethical–educational role, which is among the most important and widespread approaches in exegetical vision, influenced by the Qur’anic orientation and the writers of the Prophet’s biography, viewing history as a mirror of lessons and admonition; (۲) The socio–political role, emerging mainly in the contemporary period through social exegesis, regarding history as a source for recognizing divine laws and presenting paths for civilizational and political reform of society; (۳) The sectarian role, seeking to highlight the significance of opinions, individuals, or sectarian beliefs as gateways to historical data; and (۴) The exegetical–artistic role, involving raising awareness of the past to better understand the verses, complementing and refining historical awareness by uncovering new evidence, and correcting or refuting inaccurate historical perceptions. The findings of this article reveal that awareness of the past does not necessarily occupy priority in the use of history within Qur’anic exegesis. Rather, the ethical–educational approach holds a central position. For this reason, it is necessary to consider the growth of historical knowledge as well as the changing expectations of contemporary audiences in the historical approach. Serious attention should be given to the development of the exegetical–artistic approach and efforts should be made to cultivate it.
