Modeling and Simulation of a Multi-Energy System Based on Renewable Energy Sources

The utilization of renewable energy sources is encouraged to reduce pollutants generated by fossil fuels and to enable the hybridization of different energy sources, which in this study include solar and geothermal energy. The software EES was used to model a multi-generation system consisting of a solar-geothermal component, a Rankine cycle, and an Organic Rankine cycle, along with an absorption refrigeration cycle. Changes in various factors were considered within the software to examine their effects on performance indicators such as coefficient of performance, efficiency, and system optimization. The results indicate that the evaporator temperature significantly influences system performance, where increasing it positively impacts the energy performance, but negatively affects the exergy performance. The flow rate of geothermal fluid is also an influential factor. Increasing it helps improve energy efficiency and power output of the steam cycle, but it is recognized as a reducing factor in exergy efficiency. In addition, the study also examined the influence of the working fluids used in the organic Rankine cycle and determined that Syltherm-۸۰۰ and refrigerant R۱۲۳ exhibit better overall performance. However, the highest energy efficiency (۶۸.۲۵%) was observed with Therminol-VP۱, while the highest exergy efficiency (۶۵.۳۳%) was achieved using Therminol-۵۹.
