Determining the torsional natural frequencies of a coupling system is critically important in mechanical engineering and dynamics, as variations that approach these frequencies can lead to potentially harmful torsional resonance phenomena. This resonance can cause serious vibrations and damage to machinery. However, exciting and accurately measuring torsional modes with standard experimental modal analysis tools often presents significant challenges. To overcome this difficulty, employing indirect methods, such as adding T-shaped blocks to the system, can facilitate the identification of torsional dynamic characteristics more effectively. In this study, the torsional frequency response function of the gear coupling-rotor system is experimentally determined by strategically placing T-shaped blocks at both ends of the system. Subsequently, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is utilized to calculate the torsional natural frequencies of the system. Notably, this analysis does not consider the presence of the teeth of the coupling or the impact of misalignment. The resulting frequencies are found to be approximately the same as those calculated without accounting for misalignment between the drive and driven sides, indicating that the teeth exert a negligible effect on the overall torsional stiffness of the system.
