چکیده مقاله:

Reinforced concrete (RC) box shear walls with openings are commonly used in Iranian residential and high-rise buildings to accommodate architectural requirements, such as windows and doors. However, these openings significantly alter structural behavior, affecting stiffness, strength, and seismic performance. Neglecting these effects can lead to unsafe design assumptions and underestimation of structural vulnerability. This study numerically investigates the impact of openings on the seismic response of RC box shear walls using LS-DYNA. Key parameters, including opening size, location of openings, and aspect ratio, are analyzed with a focus on their effects on strength, stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation capacity. A detailed finite element (FE) model is developed and validated against experimental data to ensure accuracy. The results indicate that both the size and location of openings substantially affect structural performance, particularly in terms of strength and energy dissipation. These findings provide practical design recommendations to improve the seismic performance of RC box shear walls in earthquake-prone regions.
