Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium of Patients with Strongyloidiasis Compared to the Control Group

In individuals with compromised immune systems, strongyloidiasis disease can lead todisseminated infections that can be fatal if diagnosis and treatment are delayed. The humangut is composed of numerous bacteria that play essential roles in the development of acquiredimmunity, and protection against pathogenic factors.This case-control study was conducted on individuals who were referred to the DiagnosticLaboratory of Strongyloidiasis in the School of Public Health, Tehran University of MedicalSciences. After DNA extraction from fecal samples, the ۱۶SrRNA gene was examined usingReal-time PCR. The levels of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidium werecalculated in both groups (one group consisted of individuals suspected of strongyloidiasiscompared with the other group with no underlying disease). Finally, the collected data wereanalyzed.Out of ۲۸ people participants in this study, ۱۶ (۵۷%) were men and ۱۲ (۴۳%) were women,with age ranging from ۴۳ to ۷۶ years. A statistically significant relationship was observedbetween underlying diseases, vegetable washing practices, and clinical symptoms ofstrongyloidiasis. DNA extraction from the fecal samples was performed using the DNAExtraction kit. The average level of L. acidophilus and B. bifidium were (۴.۰۷۲۵۰±۳.۱۳۲۵۳۳)۱۰ ۱۲ × and, (۶.۱۲۸۵۷±۳.۵۱۹۱۶۹) ۱۰ ۱۲ × in the case group respectively, which were lowercompared to the control group but no significant association was found between the level ofbacterial in the case and control groups and the incidence of strongyloidiasis (p > ۰.۰۵), therehad (۷.۰۴۷۳۳± ۶.۵۴۲۳۷۲) ۱۰ ۱۲ ×and (۸.۳۶۶۴۳± ۴.۷۵۴۱۸۵) ۱۰۱۲× respectively. The odds ratiowas L. acidophilus and B. bifidium ۱.۱۳ and ۱.۱۴, respectively.It was observed that for each increase in the number of ۱۰ ۱۲ in the microliter forL.acidophilus and B. bifidium in the individual’s intestines in areas endemic forstrongyloidiasis, the chances of contracting this disease decreased by ۱۳% and ۱۴%,respectively. Future studies with a higher volume considering age, gender and otherphysiological factors related to strongyloidiasis are suggested.
