In recent years, the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has dramatically disrupted the process of language teaching, with ChatGPT being positioned as a highly successful teaching tool. This narrative review examined potential affordances of ChatGPT related to English language teaching (ELT) and the pedagogical opportunities and practical challenges it could present. The review utilized recent literature and educational practices to consider how ChatGPT could support language learners with personalized learning, real-time feedback, and self-directed practice. In addition, the review also considered a range of disadvantages such as misinformation, increased AI dependence, decreased human interaction, and ethical issues surrounding AI usage. The review concluded with considerations for educators, researchers, and policymakers related to integrating ChatGPT into ELT in a pedagogically meaningful way while still emphasizing pedagogical integrity and learner agency.
