چکیده مقاله:
This study employs reception theory to analyze how Balzac's novel Eugénie Grandet is perceived and interpreted in French and English linguistic and cultural contexts. Reception theory, which emphasizes the active role of the reader and the influence of socio-historical frameworks in meaning-making, serves as the theoretical foundation of this research. The methodology is analytical and theoretical, aiming to compare differences in the reception of the work based on the criteria of reception theory (reader expectations, interpretive norms, cultural context influence) between the two languages. The primary objective of this study is to compare the reception and interpretation of Eugénie Grandet in Anglophone and Francophone contexts, focusing on four key aspects. The analysis reveals that the French reception of Eugénie Grandet is more strongly influenced by Balzac's critical legacy and the novel's connections to La Comédie humaine as a whole, whereas the English reading emphasizes the universal aspects of familial tragedy and greed. Additionally, translational differences have led to variations in character perception. This research highlights the importance of cultural contextualization within reception theory.
