Developing the polyacrylonitrile/polysulfone blended polymer membranes by a non-ionic surfactant for efficient oily water separation

The polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polysulfone (PSF) blended polymer membranes were modified by decaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C۱۲EO۱۰) as a non-ionic surfactant. Polymeric solutions containing ۱۷ wt.% of both PAN and PSF with different ratios of ۹:۱ ,۸:۲, ۷:۳, ۲:۱, ۱:۲, and ۱:۱, different mass concentrations of C۱۲EO۱۰ (۳ wt.% and ۶ wt.%), polyethylene glycol (۳ wt.% and ۶ wt.%), and silica (۰.۵ wt.%, ۰.۷۵ wt.%, and ۱ wt.%) were prepared. Adding ۶ wt.% C۱۲EO۱۰ to the casting solution formed a membrane with distinguished hydrophilicity and fouling resistance, higher porosity, appreciable permeate flux (۷۷.۱ L/m۲.h), and distinct vacuum gas oil rejection (۹۲%) in comparison with the blended PAN/PSF ultrafiltration membrane. Silica nanoparticles prepared from rice husk ash with C۱۲EO۱۰ produced an excellent permeate flux of ۱۱۲ L/m۲.h and gas oil rejection of ۹۵%. The PAN/PSF membrane developed by ۶ wt.% of C۱۲EO۱۰ and ۰.۵ wt.% RHA-SiO۲ NPs exhibited improved antifouling properties with FRR% of ۹۶.۰۵% and good separation performance until four cycles of filtration.
