The Impact of Architectural Technological Evolution on the Realization of Flexibility

Due to the constant changes in life and changes in the needs of users and also the need for sustainable development, attention to flexibility in architecture has long been considered. With the advancement of technology throughout history, the architect's approach to flexibility has changed significantly. The emergence of flexibility in the architectural work was a function of two effective factors: first, the need for this in buildings and second, access to appropriate technology. In this paper, it is attempted to examine the impact of the evolution of technology on the architectural flexibility in three pre-modern, modern and post-modern periods. The research method in this article has a qualitative approach and the logical argumentation has been used in the analysis. In the pre-modern era, they achieved relatively similar solutions by following traditional methods. In this period, with the wide application of load-bearing walls for stability. So the architects tried to provide flexibility by creating multi-functional spaces at micro, medium, and macro scales. They also used variability in non-loader components to increase flexibility. As technology advanced, flexibility approaches also took advantage of new innovations. Today, various systems with capabilities such as expandability, permeability, integration, variability are used in the architectural effect. It can be noted that the realization of flexibility in buildings usually takes two paths: sometimes the advancement of technology expands some approaches of flexibility, and sometimes a creative architectural thought, without the use of any special technology, offers a new approach in this field. In the meantime, the remarkable thing is how the structure and the architect's creative thinking interact in the realization of ideas, including the achievement of flexibility.
