Temperature and pH-Responsive Chitosan Hydrogels for Targeted Drug Delivery Applications

This article reviews chitosan smart hydrogels with the ability to respond to physiological stimuli (temperature and pH). These advanced systems have revolutionized targeted drug delivery by combining the advantages of chitosan such as biocompatibility, low production cost, and chemical modification capability with smart features (automated drug release control). The present study first reviews the mechanisms of polymer network generation and factors affecting responsive behavior, then analyzes clinical applications in various therapeutic areas. Finally, challenges in mass production are presented along with practical solutions for commercialization.
